Smoking is a hard habit to break because tobacco contains nicotine, which is highly addictive. Like heroin or other addictive drugs, the body and mind quickly become so used to the nicotine in cigarettes that a person needs to have it just to feel normal.
People start smoking for a variety of different reasons. Some think it looks cool. Others start because their family members or friends smoke. Statistics show that about 9 out of 10 tobacco users start before they're 18 years old. Most adults who started smoking in their teens never expected to become addicted. That's why people say it's just so much easier to not start smoking at all.
Smoking & Alcohol causes many deadly diseases, harms nearly every organ of the body and reduces the overall health of the smoker/drinker. The many diseases caused by smoking are leukemia, stomach cancer, cataract, pancreatic cancer, cervical cancer, kidney cancer, pneumonia, and periodontitis. These diseases are the newest additions to the harmful effects of smoking. We are very much aware of the diseases caused by smoking, including bladder, laryngeal, lung, oral, and throat cancers; coronary heart and cardiovascular diseases; and chronic lung diseases. Even non-smokers are affected. The smoke exhaled by smokers passes into our lungs and can cause almost the same damage that it does to the lungs of the smokers. It does not only damage our lungs, but also our environment. The Campaign
The DKDC's Campaign against teen smoking and alcohol will kick off this February. The campaign's cost for this year alone is around P350,000.00 (detailed financial plan is available from the Treasurer), including: Public information campaign materials, travel expenses, and other miscellaneous fees. The Campaign area for this year will cover Laguna, Cavite & Batangas. There are also plans to setup a concert against teen smoking and alcohol to boost up campaign support.
